Escape Room First Timer Tips

Taking part in an escape room experience is always something I have wanted to do, along with many other people. Although I didn’t really know what to expect from the experience and it’s surprisingly difficult to find information online. I assumed that if I participated with some friends or at least the right group of people, it would be a fun and unforgettable experience. I’ve often thought that your first time doing anything is always an experience you don’t forget.

Being knocked unconscious, kidnapped and held in a dark and damp basement is what comes to mind when I read about being locked in a room for a time, although of course, the escape room experience isn’t anything like that. When I arrived at the facility, my heart was beating more loudly than normal, although the friendly staff soon put me at my ease. Of course, our group managed to get out of the room eventually, and the experience was better than I had anticipated.

If you are thinking about taking part in your first escape room experience, these tips can help you make the most of it. This advice helped me before I entered my first room. Take a look at our FAQ section if you have questions on the type of puzzles to be solved, how large the rooms are, and what happens when your allocated time is exhausted.

1) Arrive on time

I would suggest getting there at least 15 minutes before your game session starts; it doesn’t help the host or yourself if you arrive late. Being a little early lets your host tell you the rules, allows everyone to have a bathroom visit and generally lets everyone get relaxed and settled before entering the escape room. It’s not quite as easy to solve puzzles and enjoy the experience if you arrive there late, as I have done in the past.

2) You are what the game is all about

My first escape room experience had me feeling anxious and confused as soon as the door was closed behind us, and I kept second guessing myself as to whether this was a good idea or not. The experience is a lot more enjoyable if you immediately take action and enter into the spirit of the experience, rather than standing there confused, which is what I did my first time. I think most people are a little overwhelmed and confused the first time they enter an escape room, but my advice is to persevere and not give up, despite things appearing hopeless at first. If you need a gentle push to make a start on escaping from the room, your game host will do that.

3) Stay sharp

I didn’t have an enjoyable escape room experience when I arrived at the facility, having eaten too much at a nearby buffet. You’ll have a much more positive experience if you aren’t drunk or have a hangover, haven’t overeaten and have had a good night’s sleep! And don’t forget to take your glasses with you if you wear them all the time or occasionally; not being able to read accurately doesn’t make for a good experience either.

4) Think outside the box

Try to have an open mind when participating and remember that the answer may not always be obvious or be one you are anticipating. And parents, be aware that your kids often come up with the right answer, even though it may not seem like the right solution at the time.
